Adult-Use - Reference to cannabis legalization for individuals 21 and older. syn. recreational

Aliens - Inevitable topic of discussion and thoughts while in an altered state of consciousness.

Alpha Blue - A strain also known as Dream Diesel. Ideal for circumstantial stress and anxiety and immediately provides a euphoric with fit of giggles

Alien OG - An indica strain with heavy body effects and trippy cerebral buzz. Not meant for beginners. A perfect strain to “choose your adventure”

Aliens on Moonshine - A feel good CBD 1:1, 2:1 strain. It’s the only alien strain high on CBD

Anti-convulsive—Similar to the effects provided by THC and CBD, CBN may provide additional anti-convulsant effects.

Anti-spastic—THC can provide relief to patient suffering from spasticity, a symptom commonly experienced with Multiple Sclerosis, for example.

Antibacterial—Preliminary research shows that CBN may be a powerful antibiotic used in the treatment of antibiotic-resisted staph infection.

Antiemetic—Research shows that THC has excellent antiemetic properties, making it ideal for managing nausea and vomiting.

Anxiolytic—CBD is a great anti-anxiety aid and can help balance the experience of difficult emotions and anxiety related mental health conditions.

Appetite stimulant—THC will help stimulate your appetite, and may result in an unwanted case of the munchies. Like THC, CBN is a potent appetite stimulant. 

Ayahuasca - A psychoactive brew made of psychotria viridis and stalks of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine. Typically consumed in Amazonian tribes for spiritual rituals. 

Back - More common to alcohol, something you drink alongside your straight spirit, e.g. “beer with a whiskey back.” When related to cannabis, something to sip while high. Or perhaps a CBD back to a THC cultivar to balance the high.

Baked - Feeling stoned to the bone, this is the term to describe the sensation of being supremely intoxicated from cannabis. syn. stoned, ripped, abolished, blasted, “on that level."

Balanced - A high that is as long in duration as it is potent. Also, a balanced high most commonly describes products that include equal parts CBD & THC, or a 1:1 formulation or ratio. When it comes to wine, it incorporates all its main components in a manner where no one single component stands out.  

Badder/Batter - Like many cannabis concentrate, it gets its name from its cake batter-esque consistency. It is quite malleable and one of the easier forms of concentrate to get from the jar to the dabber to the bangar, without making a mess. 

Banger - Similar to a bowl piece on a bong, this is the bucket-shaped attachment for a dab rig. Typically made of quartz or glass.

Beaker - A bong with a classic beaker shape, featuring a round bottom which narrows toward the top with a tube for inhalation.

Beasters - seedless cannabis, generally low quality, commercial grade. In spirits, synonymous with well brands. 

BHO - Butane Hash Oil, one of the most common cannabis concentrates available, gets its name from the extraction agent – butane – used to remove the trichomes from the cannabis plant.

Big - Weed that has high THC content and/or an intense bouquet. Or a wine with intense flavor, or high in alcohol. syn. Loud

Bisabolol - A sweet smelling terpene found in cannabis.

Blended - Rolling a joint with more than one cannabis strain. With liquor, it describes malt whiskey combined with grain whiskey.

Blunt—A blunt is the product of ground cannabis product rolled into the outer tobacco-leaf wrapping of a cigar, or a ready-to-use blunt wrap. Unlike joints, blunts tend to be much larger and burn much more slowly. 

Blue Dream Strain - America’s favorite mellow feel good sativa. Originating in California, this sativa dominant cultivar is a cross of Blueberry and Haze.

Blueberry Strain - a high CBD strain that provides a blissful and relaxing experience. Alleviates away pain and induces good sleep.

Body - The sensation alcohol in wine creates in the mouth and is described as light, medium or full body. For weed, “body” can be used to describe the draw of smoke: light: low-vapor pen; medium: result of a manual yet modern piece of hardware like Genius Pipe or Silver Stick; full: combusted flower inhaled from a pre-roll or glass pipes/bongs

Bong - The infamous term disallowed in headshops nationwide. These cannabis consumption devices come in all shapes and sizes, vary in their functionality, and should always be kept clean. syn. piece, glass, waterpipe  [link to /stash]

Bouquet - The layers of smells and aromas perceived in a wine. Similarly, when used to describe smell of flower, layers of a bouquet accounts for a complex terpene profile.

Bogart - To take too long to pass cannabis intended to share. If someone is Bogarting, politely remind them that it’s a joint/pipe/blunt – and not a microphone.

Brown Weed - Slang for low-grade weed, typically only consumed if all our of other options

Bubble Hash - Cannabis concentrate made utilizing ice water and friction, where cannabis is placed in bags filled with ice and shaken to separate the trichome heads from the plant.

Bubblegum Strain - An indica dominant hybrid with flavor that matches its namesake.

Bubbler - Halfway between a pipe and a bong, a bubbler is a glass pipe with an additional chamber that holds water – allowing the smoke to be filtered and percolated for a smoother inhale than a classic pipe.  Read more.

Bud - The smokable part of the cannabis plant that has been dried and cured for consumption. syn. nug 

Budder - Butter infused with cannabis.

Burn - To smoke cannabis. “Let’s go burn one” means you’re off to smoke some weed.

Cannabinoids - 100 different active compounds that. These cannabinoids work alongside other compounds in the plant, such as terpenes, flavonoids and fatty acids, to provide the human body with a variety of therapeutic effects by stimulating the body’s own endocannabinoid system through CB1 and CB2 receptors that are found throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. CB1 receptors are primarily located in the brain, whereas CB2 receptors can be found in immune tissues and the remainder of the body.

Cannatonic - a 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC strain providing a heavy body and clear mind effect. Perfect to uplift and warm your insides.

Cart/Cartridge - Attached to a vape pen, it holds the cannabis concentrate. They come in different threads for attachment, making some compatible with multiple batteries, and others specific to certain hardware. 510 is the most common and compatible, but brands such as PAX and Plug and Play have cartridges that work only for their equipment.

Cashed - When you bowl or joint is completely consumed or turned to ash. syn. burned, kicked

Caryophyllene - One of the more common terpenes found cannabis, it brings the peppery-earthy-pungent stank that you can oftentimes smell from across the room.

Casper - Feeling white as a ghost? This is a term for a state of fear/paranoia induced by consuming cannabis. 

CBD - Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the many non-psychoactive cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. In addition to not producing any feelings of “being high,” CBD also mitigates the psychoactive effects produced by THC. Gaining its popularity as a treatment for intractable epilepsy, CBD also promotes homeostasis – the body’s natural balance and optimal functioning. 

CBD Beauty - There is a wide range of beauty products featuring CBD, including everything from soothing balms to bath bombs to moisturizers of all kinds, with no send in sight. 

CBN - A highly therapeutic cannabinoid that is often only present in small amounts in fresh and dried cannabis flowers. Its presence increases, however, as the famed cannabinoid THC breaks down and ages. CBN produces highly sedative effects which can help with numerous sleep disorders, such as insomnia, night-terrors and non-restorative sleep. Unlike THC, this cannabinoid produces little to no psychoactive effects. 

Charlotte’s Web - Iconic CBD strain known for its treatment of epilepsy, named after the late Charlotte Figi, whose consumption of the strain for treatment of seizures placed her in the international spotlight – as a both a patient and an advocate – for the medicinal use of cannabis.

Chaser - A beverage slightly more palatable that is meant to follow a shot of straight hooch. A “chaser” of CBD helps decrease the effects of THC.

Cherry - The lit ash in a bowl or at the end of a pre-roll, joint or spliff. Losing your cherry means the lit ash has fallen from the end of your smoke. This move can be intentional if you wanna save the remainder of your pre-roll for later. 

Cherry Chem Strain - A hybrid strain made by crossing cherry pie with chemdog. Commonly consumed by medical marijuana patients for it’s stress relieving components. 

Chemdawg - Also known as chemdog. Legendary cultivar with Grateful Dead bag seed lore lineage that spawned a host of classics. Chem ‘91, Chem’s Sister and Chem D are the main phenotypes that emerged from the original Chemdog, but it has since been bred to create stunners such as OG Kush, all the way to GMO, with no end of gassy potency in sight.

Chemdawg 4 - Part of the Chemdawg family and provides a cerebral high. 

Chemdawg 91 - Another strain from the Chemdawg family. Comes with a powerful aroma and leaves a piney, citrus aftertaste. 

Chewy -  The sense of tannins in a wine that is not overwhelming, and not necessarily a negative attribute. “Chewy” cannabis doesn’t cause dry mouth and specifically, “chewy” edibles are without a harsh weed taste. 

Chillum - A one hitter

Chop - to sell cannabis. syn. shot 

Chronic Weed - Used almost exclusively to describe high-quality marijuana cultivated in California, mostly due to Dr. Dre’s popularization of the term via his classic album The Chronic in 1992.

Cinex - The cinex strain is an especially popular cultivar in the PNW, it is a sativa dominant cross of Cinderella 99 and Vortex. Gives a zesty lemon feeling in the mouth and uplifts your energy into a dreamy euphoric state. Can cause jittery and anxious feelings if you’re not used to coffee. Inspires focused creative play in the bedroom.

Closed - A term that describes wine that is not very aromatic - or cannabis with less intense smell.

Clone - A cut of a cannabis plant that is a genetic replication of the plant it was taken from.

Cognitive Liberty - The freedom of an individual to explore and control their own cognition and consciousness. In the psychedelic realm, this looks like being free to take mind-altering substances without fear of legal persecution.

Connie Chung - A cannabis strain named after the pioneering journalist. Ideal to unwind and relax and gives a hazy head high

Cookies -  A cannabis strain with an intriguing peppery earthy aroma. Has myrcene & beta-caryophyllene and helps with pain relief, nausea, appetite, and sex.

CO2 - Carbon Dioxide, widely used in the extraction process of cannabis concentrates. Considered to be the safest of extraction solvents due to its naturally-occurring presence. 

Combustion - Joints, blunts, pipes, one-hitters, bubblers and bongs all involve combusting the cannabis plant material. Although having a long history within the cannabis community, is not recommended for your health. 

Complex - A wine that gives a perception of being multi-layered in terms of flavors and aromas. Cannabis chemovars with multi-layered terpenes and flavinoids has a complex profile. 

Cone - Don’t know how to roll? In many ways a cone is an empty pre-roll, where all you have to do is load the flower. Easy and efficient, great for on the go.

Concentrates - A substance where the cannabinoids and terpenes have been isolated from the cannabis plant’s trichomes. 

Connected - A sense of a wine's ability to relay its place of origin or terroir. Likewise, every cannabis harvest results in an experience that fully personifies the specifics of its grow environment.

Corked - A wine that has cork taint. Weed that has lost its freshness is “corked.” Characteristics include…

Cottonmouth - dry-mouth. syn. Pasties

Cross - The combination of cannabis genetics to create a new line. For example, Sour Diesel is a cross of Chemdog and Super Skunk.

Crumble - A cannabis concentrate named after its consistency. Can be dabbed, but is a texture that makes it easily added as a bowl topper or sprinkled in a joint. 

Cultivar - While the term strain remains more widely used, cultivar is the more appropriate designation when discussing plants – and strain is more appropriate in the reference of variants of viruses and bacteria. Just think of how many different cultivars of apples or onions there are in existence. syn. strain

Cultural Appropriation - Involves taking or using something that comes from a culture that is not yours without gaining permission, giving credit to the source, or respecting its original meaning. For example, a white, Western person buying ayahuasca online and holding their own ceremony with no acknowledgment of where the medicine has come from would be considered cultural appropriation.

Cultural Appreciation, conversely, is when someone seeks to understand and learn about another culture in a way that is respectful and earnest. In the plant medicine world, this looks like spending time educating yourself on the culture and communities that have safeguarded sacred medicines and honoring their traditions through respectful use.

D

Dab - “Taking a dab” is a reference to consuming cannabis concentrates, where small amounts of high potency, concentrated material is vaporized and inhaled. Dabs come in a multitude of types and textures, indicative of the extraction method utilized and the form of the end product.   

Dab Rig—A device part of the water-pipe family used to consume cannabis extracts such as shatter or wax. While some dab rigs include special technology which heats the bowl into which the extract is placed, the OG dab rig typically involves the heating of the glass bowl using a blowtorch.

Dank - High quality, pungent weed, likely bringing a loud aroma ripe with terpenes. syn. loud, top shelf, chronic, no mids

Decolonization - The practice of establishing cultural, economic, and psychological freedom and sovereignty for indigenous peoples. In the psychedelic space, this means fighting the cultural, economic, and environmental exploitation of indigenous communities that have safeguarded ancestral traditions and medicines for millennia, and supporting their self-determination. It also involves examining all the ways in which indigenous medicines, culture, and spirituality are being appropriated and extracted for profit, power, and prestige by individuals, organizations, and companies from colonizing nations. Finally, it means dismantling the institutional legacy of colonialism that continues to enable the accumulation of wealth and power into the hands of the most privileged.

Detroit Diesel Strain - A sativa strain created by crossing NYC Diesel and Cinderella 99

Delta-8 - A hemp derived cannabinoid but with the power to still get you high.

Depth - A wine with several layers of flavor and is an aspect of complexity. A taste and high invoked by cannabis characterized by a different taste and/or feeling from start to finish. see ‘COMPLEX’

Diamonds - Reference to the sparkly cannabis concentrate, often combined with sauce high in terpenes.

Diesel - Diesel strains offer energizing cerebral effects perfect for inspiring creativity. Marked by a distinct diesel gas and tart citrus aroma, this family of buds offer some of the most coveted sativa dominant strain varieties.

Dirty - “Dirt weed” is a product that has been improperly flushed and tests positive for solvents.

Distillate - Typically bound for cartridges or edibles, distillate utilizes a combination of extraction processes to isolate a specific cannabinoid for consumption.

DMT - Short for dimethyltryptamine, it is one of the most potent psychedelics on the planet. Sometimes referred to as the "drive-by" of psychedelics due to its short duration (5-15 minutes), it is also a key ingredient in ayahuasca, in which the potent blend induces significantly longer trips. Whether used in ritualistic or recreational fashion, users of DMT report significant distortions of time and space, the revisiting of past lives, and communication with entities and beings not from Earth.

Dose - Amount of active cannabinoids in a serving of cannabis. For edibles, most states cap a single dose at 10mg for REC products (OR is an exception at 5mg max in a signle serving). MED products often are regulated at higher doses to account for the extreme needs of patients.

Doser - A spring loaded device usually attached to espresso grinders which dispenses one serving of ground coffee per pull. For weed, think of devices like a hmblt vape pen that vibrates when your pull has reached its dose. A PAX Era vape pen can be programmed to stop dispensing when you pull to give consumers ultimate control over their high.

Double Dream Strain -  A sativa dominant hybrid strain that puts you into a deep relaxing euphoric state.

Dro - high-grade cannabis, grown with hydroponics, that is usually more expensive. In spirits, synonymous with premium or “Top Shelf.” 

Durban Poison Weed - A legendary, pure sativa cultivar from the port city of Durban in Africa. Known as the “espresso of cannabis”, its genetics have been crossed to create many modern day greats, including GSC, which means she runs through Sherbet, Wedding, Gelato – the list goes on and on.

Dutch Treat - A cannabis strain to enjoy in silence, providing a rush of cerebral uplifting euphoria. An essential strain in the Amsterdam coffee shops

Dry - Cannabis that is devoid of moisture. ant. “Sticky”

Earthy - A wine with aromas/flavor reminiscent of earth (forest floor / mushrooms); dry palate caused by high levels of geosmin. In addition to being a descriptor for weed with aromas and flavor reminiscent of earth, this term can certainly be a descriptor for dry mouth: “No sky, no ocean. my entire mouth felt like dry earth.”

Edibles—Food infused with cannabis. Way beyond the traditional pot brownie, today cannabis edibles come in everything from savory snacks to gummies to beverages – and vary in milligram dosage of THC. Patience is key with edibles. Remember, you can always consume more, but you can’t take it back once it goes down the hatch.

EHO -  Ethanol Hash Oil, this is the cannabis concentrate resulting from ethanol extraction, which is considered safer than other extraction solvents such as butane and propane.

Embodiment - Revisiting your trip by listening to the music you listened to while having a psychedelic experience within the days and weeks following. This is most successful with eyes closed and directing your focus to the sensations including hallucinations present at the time of the trip.

E-Nail - Short for electronic nail, this will heat your banger for dabbing without the hassle of the open flame of a butane torch. 

Entheogen- Primarily plant- and fungus-based psychoactive substances that induce altered states of consciousness resulting in profound spiritual experiences. Commonly known entheogens include Ayahuasca, peyote, psilocybe mushrooms, and LSD.

Entourage Effect - All of the compounds in the cannabis plant working in concert together to produce greater benefits, as opposed to isolated cannabinoids or terpenes. 

Epilepsy - CBD has been used as a treatment for intractable epilepsy, especially in pediatric patient populations.

Extraction—A reference to a solvent-based methodology by which the resin glands or trichomes of cannabis are separated from the plant matter, resulting in a concentrated form. Although variable in its final texture and viscosity, extracted cannabis is found in vape pens, dab concentrate and edible formulations.

Fair trade - A term most notably used in the coffee industry that certifies a coffee product represents greater equity in international trade. When cannabis can be exported from small cultivators around the world, we hope our industry adopts similar standards.

Fallen over - A person who is quickly affected by weed: “One hit of OG Kush and I’m fallen over.”

Fatty - A joint that is large in size and likely for sharing. ant. pinner

FECO - Full Extract Cannabis Oil

Finish - The taste left on the palate after wine has been swallowed. The lingering taste after consuming cannabis, i.e. tastebuds interpretation of terpenes. syn. aftertaste.  May also be used to describe the results of your high, “Jack Herer finished me off right!” 

Fire - A reference to very high quality weed. If she “has the fire” she isn’t an arsonist – she’s in possession of exceptional cannabis. syn. top shelf, dank, chronic

Flat -In relation to sparkling wines, “flat” refers to a wine that has lost its effervescence. If you experience little effect from weed - meaning it lacks psychotropic effects, its “flat.” Specifically, CBD is flat.

Flower—Cannabis plants can be male, female, or both! However, the flowers of the plant which are used to derive therapeutic effects are found on the female plant exclusively. 

Freshness - Like with all natural goods that are packaged without preservatives, freshness is lost over time and at a rate that depends on how it is stored. This certainly applies to the viability of cannabis. Storing your cannabis in an air-tight glass jar is your best bet for ensuring freshness. Moisture and humidity can seriously effect the appearance, aroma and effects of the cannabis, so it’s always good to include a Boveda pack which will help maintain optimal humidity levels and control for mold. For a perfect batch of that sticky, go for the 62% humidity option.

Fresh Frozen - Cannabis plant material that has been frozen directly after harvest to retain higher terpene content, as opposed to traditional drying and curing methods.

Full - Wine with heavy weight or body, due to its alcohol content is “full.” Furthermore, this term can also refer to a wine that is rich in flavor and extract. Weed that is “full” is high in THC. 

Full Spectrum - Cannabis and hemp products are labeled “full spectrum” when the plant’s extracts maintain its full chemical profile including cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids as well as other naturally occurring compounds. syn. “whole plant” extracts.

Full Melt - Extremely high grade hash which leaves zero residue after smoking, fully melting upon heating.

G

Ganja - Common term for cannabis in Jamaica or Rastafarian culture, originating in India.

Garanimals Strain - This indica strain provides a full body high, calming the nervous system and alleviates stress.

Gatekeeping - In Psychedelic Medicine means stakeholders attempting to control who gets to administer psychedelics through high requirements for licensure or credentialing, or by establishing high barriers to education and professional entry. For example, the concept that only those with Western academic credentials in psychotherapy and medicine are uniquely qualified to administer psychedelics overlooks millennia of indigenous use and has been criticized as medical and psychiatric industry gatekeeping.

Ghost - To hold in the smoke for an extended period of time until, and upon exhalation, no smoke is visible. syn. "ghosting it" 

Girl Scout Cookies - Also referred to as “Cookies”. This modern day legend is an indica dominant hybrid cross of OG Kush and Durban Poison, celebrated for its wide range of effects, including euphoria, relaxation and serious appetite stimulation.

Glass [link to /glass] - most commonly used material to create smoking products

God shot - refers to the perfect espresso shot, we think of it as the perfect nug

Grade - A coffee term that indicates coffee bean size, which is associated with coffee quality. Certainly, a nug of mentionable size has always been associated with premium flower. 

Granddaddy Purple - A strain that induces a relaxed body and dreamy mindstate. Best consumed after settling into a couch.

Grassy-  The herbaceous or vegetal element of a wine—ranging from freshly mown lawn grass to lemon grass flavors.

A common adj. to refer to smell of weed, “Did the closet smell grassy?”

Green - A slang term that is synonymous to “cannabis flower.”

Green Crack - A highly energetic cannabis strain meant for the daytime and inspires sexy energy with creativity in the bedroom. Some say it’s like smoking sunshine.

Green fever - You can’t overdose on cannabis, but you can get the green fever. Often characterized by sweating and nausea, it’s typically induced by taking a way-too-big bong hit, too large of a dab, or too high of an edible dose. Be careful – it’s all too easy to get higher, but getting less high will take some time. 

Green hit - the first hit of a freshly-packed bowl, where the marijuana is still green.

Green out - similar to a “black out” on alcohol, a green out is indicative of a dose of cannabis that leaves its consumer in a deep state of forgetfulness, spaciness and/or complete couchlock. 

Grow Your Own - to cultivate your own cannabis. As states have legalized for both medical and adult-use, the notion of “growing your own” or “home grow” is regulated via restrictions on the number of plants allowed, it permitted at all.

GSC - The cannabis strain formerly known as Girl Scout Cookies

Gummies - one of the most popular types of cannabis edibles in the legalization era, coming in all the shapes, sizes, flavors and potency one could imagine. Celebrated for their ease with dosing, while sometimes facing scrutiny due to their appeal to children.

Hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD) - A non-psychotic disorder in which a person experiences lasting visual hallucinations or perceptual changes after taking a hallucinogenic substance. These effects may last for weeks or months after the drug experience, with some rare, severe cases reporting lifelong symptoms.

Harlequin Strain - A mildly intoxicating strain with 2:1 CBD to THC ratio. Gives a very pleasant and calm high meant for pain and sleep. Very similar to that “1970’s” pot.

Harvest - The cutting down of cannabis plants in preparation for the next stages of drying or freezing, trimming and curing, etc.

Hash—A staple in the cannabis world, hash is made by compressing the resin of the dried flower bud. It can also be produced by using solvents like ice water or ethanol to more precisely capture the plant’s cannabinoid content. 

Haze —Haze strains are typically classified as sativa-dominant strains for their clear-headed, energetic and focused high. However, this strain variety also promotes a deep sense of relaxation that follows the intense cerebral high, making it a great option for a variety of moods.

Headband Weed - The bigger and stronger cousin to CINEX, and should be avoided if sensitive to coffee. Helps creative thinking and reduced stress, however too much can make you feel physically sedated, with a long lasting high. A cross between OG kush and sour diesel. 

Heirloom Strains—An heirloom strain is a landrace strain cultivated outside of its original geographic area. Heirloom strains are distinct from their landrace roots as a result of adaptation to local environments in which they are grown.

Hippie Hit - lighting a section of a bowl in order for others to get an equal "green" hit. syn. “cornering it” 

Hippie Speedball - Consuming caffeine and THC

Holding - in possession of cannabis. syn. Holden Caulfield, be live

Headies - a step above beasters; a general category for the best cannabis. In spirits, synonymous with call brands. 

Heavy - Used to describe effects of body high as a result of high THC or CBD dose.

Herbal - Used to describe the general smell of weed. When it comes to wine, it’s a flavor or aroma "reminiscent of herbs." 

Hollow - A hollow weed is not very tasty. More common to wine, it describes lacking the sense of fruit.

Hot - Terminology for a super potent weed, or overly alcoholic wine. “This strain is hot.”

Hot Rod Strain - An indica dominant hybrid strain with an intense smell. Will make you laugh and then quickly sleepy

Hybrid - Cannabis that possesses both traditional sativa and indica characteristics.

Hydrocarbon - Solvent used in extraction process to separate trichomes from cannabis plant.

Hydroponic Weed - Indoor cannabis cultivation methodology which uses water as the growing medium instead of soil.

I

Indica - Referring to the more stony and relaxing traits of cannabis cultivars, indicas can bring a heavier hit and induce what’s commonly known as couchlock – or INDAcouch. Indicas are native to dryer, colder and harsher terroir, and grow in shorter and stockier fashion with wide fan leaves. The effects of pure indica or indica-dominant cannabis strains are most often used to achieve more body-centric effects, providing effective pain relief and producing a sedative effect. A perfect night cap before a good night’s rest, indica dominant strains will help inspire a state of deep relaxation.

Inflammation - CBD has strong anti-inflammatory properties and can help with a variety of conditions. Most recently, animal-based research shows that CBN has substantial anti-inflammatory properties. 

Infused - Combining another product with the flavor and aroma of cannabis. Typically then used for cooking.

Insomnia - CBN is a highly sedative cannabinoid that will help even the most sleepless patient get a good night’s rest. 

Jack - As in Jack Herer - pronounced like “terror” - is a high energy strain that is a favorite to many, much like the legendary cannabis advocate it's named for – the cannabis advocate, author of “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” and the legendary sativa cultivar that bears his name. Jack the Ripper - A strain consumed best for a walk on the wild side. Not for those prone to anxiety, however you can expect a grand euphoric feeling and diminishes depression. 

Jammy - A wine that is rich in fruit. A term used to describe weed w/ rich fruit taste.

Joint—Also known as a “marijuana cigarette” a joint remains one of the most popular methods for consuming cannabis. A joint is the product of ground cannabis bud expertly wrapped in a rolling paper in a fashion that closely resembles a tobacco cigarette. 

Ketamine - Medically used as an anesthetic, and recreationally used to get high. Produces a visual and auditory distortion. Loved for its ability to transport you out of reality.

Kief—A soft, powdery substance made up of resin glands found on the trichomes of the cannabis flower. Kief is typically used to make hash, but can also be added to dried cannabis product for a heightened experience.  [link to /concentrates]

Kine - marijuana of high quality and refers to sinsemilla, a Spanish term meaning "without seed."  often mistaken as "kind” or “kind bud." In spirits, synonymous with premium or “Top Shelf.”

Kush - Originating from the Hindu Kush mountain range that runs between Afghanistan and Pakistan, Kush genetics are some of the most celebrated in the cannabis world. Landrace Strains—Pure and rare varieties of cannabis strains that form part of the original genetics evolved within a single geographic region (Jamaica, India, Africa, Mexico, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central America). 

Lean - The sense of acidity in the wine that lacks a perception of fruit. A cannabis cultivar low on taste; cough syrup often mixed with sprite at differing ratios

Legs -  For wine, the tracks of liquid that cling to the sides of a glass after the contents have been swirled. For weed, used to describe swirls of smoke that speak to complexity of body.

Lemon Daddy - A daytime strain combining super lemon haze and grandaddy purple. Provides a relaxed yet focused feeling.

Lemon Skunk -An energizing strain that’s great for beginners and people with creative blocks.

Limonene - One of the more popular and abundant terpenes found in cannabis. It is known for its bright and citrus-forward aroma and flavor, as well as being a mood enhancer and anxiety fighter. Cultivars with lemon, lime or orange in the name are likely to have limonene in them.

Live Resin - A solvent-based cannabis extract made from fresh frozen plant material.

LSD - More commonly referred to as Acid, lysergic acid diethylamide is a potent psychedelic originally synthesized by Albert Hofmann in 1938. His discovery came via an accidental dosing in his laboratory, where he first felt the mind-altering effects of the substance. An LSD trip can last longer than 8 hours, and users report everything from significant changes in sensory perception to ego dissolution. While both spiritual and recreational in its use, it is regaining popularity for its medicinal applications in psychotherapy for those struggling with addiction, depression and other mental health issues.

MDMA - More commonly referred to as Molly or Ecstasy, 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine is the entheogen first synthesized in 1912 by Merck, but not popularized in its current fashion until the 1970s, when Andrew Shulgin's work with the substance gained traction. Celebrated for its empathy and connection inducing qualities, it was originally used as therapeutic in counseling sessions – before it made its way to the rave scene, where its reputation as a dangerous party drug took hold. By 1985, the DEA declared its illegality via its Schedule I classification. It is currently reemerging in its original, therapeutic form, via studies of its efficacy in treating PTSD.

Microdosing - Terminology for consumption of a substance that is a fraction of a regular dose. These lower doses vary depending on the substance, but is typically done to achieve an optimal experience without the undesired side effects of being too high. 

Microdosing - A popular way of taking psychedelics that involves taking a very small dose – technically one-tenth or less of an active dose – so as to create a barely perceptible "sub-threshold" effect. The practice of microdosing psychedelics has surged in recent years due to its popularity among entrepreneurs, athletes, and other otherwise healthy, high-performing "productivity hackers."

Mids - medium-grade - or mid-grade cannabis. In spirits, synonymous with call brands. If you want “top shelf,” then you want “no mids.”

Mood Stabilizer - Research into the potential of CBD for managing mental health conditions is on the rise. Early studies show strong potential for CBD to help with mental health conditions such as schizophrenia. 

Musty - A wine with a "dank, old-attic smell" arising from processing moldy grapes or using dirty storage containers. This term also describes the smell associated with the terpene humulene, often described as “old ladies purse.”

Myrcene - The most dominant terpene found in the cannabis plant. Known for the earthy aroma often associated with weed, myrcene is celebrated for its calming attributes – great for a good night’s sleep or relieving stress and tension. Beyond cannabis, myrcene is found in hops and lemongrass.

Neat - To order a spirit served entirely by itself—no ice, no mixers, no chilling even. To consume cannabis “neat” is to consume it with no additional substances (tobacco, chief? kief, oils). 

Neuroprotective - Studies show that CBD has neuroprotective properties and may help with the development of neurons in the brain, while also helping prevent neurodegenerative disease.

New York City Diesel - A hybrid strain that creates a strong head high. Typically makes you very talkative. Comes with a citrusy aroma

No mids - Colloquial term for the highest quality cannabis in a shop. Top Shelf cannabis typically hovers in the $15+ per gram range, with eighths oftentimes exceeding $60. syn. top shelf, fire, chronic, dank

Nose - They say “the nose knows” when it comes to identifying your preferences. The aroma, smell or bouquet of a weed or wine – followed by a descriptor of smell.

Nug - The smokable part of the cannabis plant. It has been trimmed of any leaves, cried and cured for consumption. syn. bud

On the rocks - A spirit poured and served over ice. Cold water hash is weed “on the rocks.”

Pain relief - THC is an effective analgesic and provides strong pain relieving effects, making it and ideal alternative to traditional pain killers. Like THC, CBN provides potent pain relieving effects.

Panama Red - A cannabis sativa popular in the 60’s and 70’s. Named after its reddish color

Paraphernalia - glass and other tools used to consume cannabis. syn. kit, piece, rig

Pause for the Cause - to take a break, particularly from a video game, to smoke.

Pennywise Strain - A one-to-one CBD to THC strain that provides mental clarity and focus, with milder psychoactive effects.

Percolator - The part of the bong that gets it bubbling. The most common types are disc and showerhead, and are found in scientific glass with varying degrees of functionality and intricacy.

Phenotype - A term for the physical expression of a cannabis cultivar. Growers will often grow multiple seeds of the same strain, with each subsequent plant being a different phenotype of the strain grown.

Piff -  Used almost exclusively in New York City to describe high-quality marijuana. The East Coast equivalent of “chronic.” In spirits, synonymous with premium or “Top Shelf.”

Pills - Although synthetic cannabinoid pill formulations, such as Nabilone, exist, the medical cannabis industry is working hard to provide patients with novel plant-based pharmaceutical formulations such as pills and capsules. Some licensed producers offer infused cannabis oils in pill or capsule form already. 

Pinner - A very thin joint, containing little cannabis and often consumed solo. ant. fatty 

Pinene - With a scent that most certainly matches its name, pinene is the most abundant terpene found in nature. Reminiscent of freshly cut pine, this fragrant terpene is known for being a reliever of pain and fighter of anxiety. [link to /terpenes]

Pink Kush - This is a strain almost exclusively available in Canada. A bedroom cannabis strain that provides a philosophical high. Gives you a very loving, energetic feeling.

Pink Lemonade - A cannabis strain that helps take the edge off after a rough day. Provides a clear mind and ideal for completing repetitive tasks.

Pink Panties: A cannabis strain that leans into the sativa side. A favorite amongst women who are light smokers. Creates a light and giggly feeling and a sense of everything being okay. 

Pipe - Sometimes referred to as “bowls” cannabis pipes are a relatively sleek way to consume cannabis. Crafted out a variety of materials such as glass, wood, metal, stone and crystal, pipes are a popular smoking accessory as they allow the consumer to consume small amounts of cannabis while producing effects similar to that of a joint. Traditionally this process will be guided or overseen by a shaman, who has spent years of their life learning everything there is to know about one or more plant medicines and understands how to travel into the unseen spirit world and return with insights and knowledge.

Potency 

Psilocybin - The organic hallucinogenic compound that is *the magic* in MAGIC MUSHROOMS. There are hundreds of species of Psilocybe cubensis, or psychedelic mushrooms containing various level of psilocybin and each providing slightly different benefits and effects. Ancient indigenous cultures (hundreds to thousands of years ago) ingested Psilocybe cubensis ceremonially and some even called it “God’s Flesh” due to its ability to enhance the mind and spirit. 

Psychedelic - Term used to describe a substance or experience that alters perception and/or expands consciousness. THC is known to produce mild psychedelic effects in some users, while psilocybin, LSD, DMT, etc. produce more classic psychedelic experiences with regard to intensity and duration. 

Psychedelic Capitalism - A growing paradigm in which for-profit companies and investors enter the psychedelic space with the hope to benefit financially from the surge in demand for psychedelic therapy. Some of the players that stand to develop from psychedelic capitalism include drug development companies, mental health care companies, and psychedelic VC investors.

Psychedelic Exceptionalism - An ideology that maintains that psychedelics are less harmful and less addictive and thus inherently "better" than other "hard" drugs, such as cocaine and heroin. This ideology often comes alongside the argument that psychedelics should be granted legal or decriminalized status, whereas other Schedule 1 substances should remain illegal.

Psychedelic Gatekeeping - Refers to various attempts by powerful stakeholders in the psychedelic industry to control and dominate aspects of the market. Gatekeeping might look like drug development companies attempting to control and limit general access to a psychedelic substance, or establish a monopoly through patents that restrict who may produce, administer, or share data related to patented compounds and processes.

Psychedelic integration - A new and growing field that refers to the process of integrating insights, realizations, and emotions that arise from a psychedelic experience to support desired outcomes in life. Any kind of psychedelic experience, no matter how challenging or traumatic at the time, can be reflected upon and integrated in such a way that ultimately supports the individual’s goals, desired outcomes, or stated intentions for the session or ceremony.

Psychedelic medicine - A term used to denote a more Western approach to healing with psychedelics and can include both natural and synthetic psychedelics. Generally, it refers to the use of psychedelic substances to help treat mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction.

Psychedelic Narrative Control - Happens when a person or group attempts to control the narrative around a topic or issue in the psychedelic space. An example of this might be if an influential mental health company tried to control the narrative around the inherent safety of psychedelic therapy in a medical setting vs. personal use of psychedelics.

The Psychedelic Patent Wars - Have emerged in the last few years as a controversial part of psychedelic capitalism. Several for-profit psychedelic companies are attempting to patent the synthetic and natural formation of certain psychedelic drugs and other aspects of psychedelic therapy in the hope to push out competitors and establish a monopoly in this burgeoning space.

Psychedelic therapy - Usually means using psychedelic substances in a Western therapeutic style, to help address mental health issues. Mostly, the psychedelic will be in the hands of a trained clinical therapist, who will gently guide a participant through a psychedelic experience, alongside a copious therapy course before and after the trip, to help them address a specific mental health issue.

Purple Haze - A sativa strain named after a Jimmy Hendrix song. A heavy cerebral high that delivers a strong euphoric punch.

Purple Headband Strain - An energizing hybrid strain, that can make you feel like there’s pressure around your temples.

Q

Quartz - One of the most common materials used for making dabbing tools, such as bangers and nails, due to their capacity to withstand the very high temperatures associated with dabbing.

QP - Referring to a quarter pound of cannabis. It’s also 4 ounces or 112 grams, depending on what your preferred unit of measurement is. 

Rainbow Sherbert Strain - a 50/50 sativa indica hybrid strain. Known for its “yummy” fruity and minty taste. Gets you high almost immediately and helps declutter mental fog.

Recreational - Reference to cannabis legalization for individuals 21 and older. syn. adult-use

Reefer - One of the classic, scare tactic terms for cannabis, originating during the days of prohibition.

Resin - The sticky and gooey substance that is secreted from the trichomes of the cannabis plant.

Rich - A sense of sweetness in the wine that is not excessive. A good, full flavored cannabis strain. 

Rig - A piece of paraphernalia specifically for dabbing or consuming cannabis concentrates.

Rosin - Utilizing heat and pressure only in the separation of trichomes from the cannabis plant, this solventless concentrate is one of the more sought-after and high-end products available. 

Ruderalis - also known as “cannabis ruderalis”, is a low THC variety of the cannabis plant. The third, lesser known sister to Sativa and Indica. 

Runtz - A strain that starts with a head high and then moves into a mild body high. An indica that’s effective for treating stress and anxiety, but still makes you chatty and social.

RSO - Rick Simpson Oil, the ethanol extracted cannabis concentrate typically ingested orally or applied topically. Originally made by Rick Simpson himself, who used it to treat his skin cancer. 

Sacred Reciprocity - Refers to the mutual exchange of value and energy that must take place between all living things in order to maintain harmony and balance in the natural world. This concept of giving and receiving has its origins in many indigenous cultures – in Quechua, for example, the word for sacred reciprocity is Ayni. For Western people using ancestral plant medicines, sacred reciprocity looks like giving back to indigenous groups, perhaps financially or by working to fight ecological issues related to their community. It also involves engaging in responsible, sustainable, and respectful use of the medicines.

Sativa - Referring to a cannabis cultivar with more uplifting and energetic effects, sativas are known to grow in a tall and sometimes spindly fashion, featuring thin and pointed leaves. Classic sativas include Durban Poison, Jack Herer and Blue Dream. [link to /strain-families]

Saturna - A highly sexually energetic cannabis strain to smoke in the bedroom. Provides feelings of fun, pleasure, erotica.

Sauce - Cannabis extract named after its sauce-like consistency, it is often high in terpenes and combined with diamonds.

Schwag - Low quality weed, often comprised of many stems and seeds and otherwise unsmokable parts of the cannabis plant.

Secret agent - a normal cigarette emptied of tobacco and filled with pot.

Sedative - THC is highly sedative and can not only help you get to sleep, but stay asleep. What’s more, although indicas are typically believed to help promote sleep, high enough doses of THC, regardless of whether the THC is found in a sativa or indica dominant bud will result in a sedative effect. In fact, some indica-dominant strains are reported to have pronounced cerebral and energizing effects, contrary to what the plant genetics may initially dictate.  

Session - Partaking in the consumption of cannabis.

Shake - Tiny pieces of cannabis flower that has fallen or broken off larger cannabis buds. 

Shatter - A potent cannabis extract characterized by its amber glass appearance, shatter is considered one of the purest extract products out there. With potency reaching as high as 97% THC, in some cases. This powerful extract will result in much more precise effects than the bud from which it is derived. One reason for this nuanced type of effect results from the stripping of the majority of terpenes during the extraction process.

Sherbert - This potent cross of GSC and Pink Panties also goes by Sunset Sherbet. Bred by the iconic Sherbinski, its dessert-y profile will leave you stress-free and floating with that Cookies-esque high.

Six Star - Or 6*, this is the highest grade hash you’ll find. Specifically, it is the microns of the trichome heads, and comes in a sand-like consistency.

Skunk —Known for their skunk-like aroma, skunk strain varieties provide a balanced and uplifting psychoactive effect and full-body buzz. First developed in the 1970s, this cannabis strain family is considered to be one of the most important hybrid strain groups ever created. 

Smart Rig - An electronic piece used in the consumption of cannabis concentrates that includes the heating element as a component of the device, negating the need for a butane torch. These often feature color-coded temperature settings and apps to control it via your smart phone.

Snap - To smoke an entire bowl in one inhalation.

Sour - Strains with “sour” in the name denotes …. If you have dry mouth, you may say, “I’m sour.”

Sour Tsunami  - The first cannabis strain specifically bred for high CBD. Combats mental stress and makes you more productive during the daytime.

Tangie - A cannabis strain that provides a philosophical high. Making you feel connected to nature and have intimate sexual feelings for self and partner.

Tart - A wine with high levels of acidity and results in a mouth watering sensation. Weed that is “tart” causes smacky dry mouth.

Terpenes - Found widely in nature, these compounds bring the unique flavor and aroma to specific cultivars.

Tinctures - Cannabis tinctures have historically been one of the most popular ways to consume cannabis, produced by soaking dried cannabis flowers in alcohol to allow for the natural extraction of THC, CBD and other cannabinoids. Vaporizer—A vaporizer is a device that allows an individual to consume cannabis vapor, as opposed to smoke. Vaporizing cannabis product involves a process called decarboxylation wherein the cannabis product is heated—not burned!— to produce a warm vapor that is less detrimental for the lungs. Wax - Cannabis concentrate named for its consistency, wax-like and malleable.
